Movie: District 9 (2009)
This movie alienates Alien Nation (see what I did there!).
The actors are amateurs and CGI and a lot more fun to watch than Johnny Depp. The director jumps around a bit but still scores. The script is partially improv’d and all the better for it.
Compared to the great Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, this movie must learn to govern its passions.
If Leonard Nimoy had directed it, there’d be three aliens and a little baby.
If Scotty had seen the movie with me, he’d have said, “Give me one dilithium crystal and a pint of Romulan ale and I’ll have that alien ship flying in no time.”
Overall: Aliens on Earth are stuck in a South African ghetto. Allusions ensue, but also a dynamic narrative made of not-always-smoothly-mixed parts. Schematically a B movie you’ve seen before, but affecting and effectively told. But please, no sequel!
I give this movie: 4 Nomads
